Looking After the basics .
Having properly functioning gutters and drains will save you bundles of money in the long run ,they are your main defences against the worst the British weather can throw at us , these two aspects channel the water away from your house .
All you need to do is stay on top of the basics ,keep your gutters and downpipes clean and free running , now you need to make sure the pipe running down the side of your house into a 4" underground drain is not blocked at ground level.
Blocked drains on older houses is extremely common ,this is mainly due to moss and sand from pointing etc over many years soon builds up ,this can even in real cold winters cause older clay drains to crack and break which often goes unnoticed causing potentially big problems.
Obviously your roof needs to be watertight and if you have wooden windows keep them treated or painted .
This will save you money .
